Days of Palestine, Al-Naqab –Israeli authorities have recently turned historic mosque into museum despite urgent need for Muslims to use it.
Locals said the Israeli authorities changed Beershva Grand Mosque into a museum for Islamic culture despite the urgent need for 10,000 Muslims there to perform daily prayers in the mosque.
The Mosque was opened as an exhibition for old prayers’ rugs despite a petition filed in 2011 by Muslim representatives to the Israeli Supreme Court to allow Muslims to perform prayers there.
Palestinians built the Mosque in 1906, during the Othman era, and in 1948, the year of the Palestinian Nakba and Israeli occupation of most of Palestinian lands, the occupation changed it into a detention centre.
Later on, the Mosque was turned to a magistrate court and in 1953 it was changed into museum. In 1992 it became dilapidated so it was closed. Now, it is opened as an exhibition for Islamic heritage.
The Grand Mosque of Beershva is the only one in the area, which the Muslim community urgently need to perform their prayers.
Representatives of the Muslim Arab community have long petitioned Israeli authorities to allow them to open the Mosque for daily prayers or at least once a week for Friday prayers.
The irony in this exhibition is that the Israeli authorities have never showed any concern over the Palestinian or Islamic heritage.

In addition, the exhibition, which will continue until June 2015, has no Arab or Muslim member on the technical supervisory team.
