Days of Palestine, Gaza Strip –Palestinian security in Gaza Strip has imposed strict measures to stop illegal emigration after news about dozens sank in the Mediterranean last week.
A security source told Days of Palestine that the National Security officers have increased their existence at the borders with Egypt.
According to the source, the security services detained a number of owners of smuggling tunnels, who are believed to be behind smuggling emigrants out from Gaza.
The source, which spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the owners of the tunnel are being now investigated over smuggling Gazans, noting that smuggling people started about three years ago.
In addition to the smugglers, the source said that the security services detained a number of Gazans, who returned back before sailing.
“They are being questioned about the reasons behind their attempt to leave and also the reasons behind their return,” the source said. “They are to be asked to give information about other emigrants, who were lost in the sea.”
Early this week, the Director of the Euro-Mid Observer Rami Abdu blamed the Israeli occupation, which has been imposing a strict siege on the Strip, for the illegal emigration among the Gazans.
“The emigrants were trying to search for better life opportunities outside the besieged and war-torn enclave,” Abdu told Days of Palestine. He called for the people thinking to emigrate to think “deliberately” before they take such “dangerous” decisions.
