DaysofPal- More than 3,500 children in the Gaza Strip are at risk of dying due to severe malnutrition, according to a dire warning from the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics.
According to the Bureau, approximately 30% of children in Gaza suffer from acute malnutrition, with 2,500 requiring immediate medical evacuation.
The Bureau noted that the number of children suffering from acute malnutrition is increasing and is currently estimated at 50,000. These children are in critical need of care, and if nothing changes, estimates suggest that the number of impacted children could rise by 20% in the upcoming weeks.
The UN has previously stated that 11,000 pregnant women in Gaza already live in conditions similar to famine, and over 17,000 are in danger of starvation, which adds to the already concerning figures. These figures underscore the region’s catastrophic state of food insecurity and malnutrition.
The humanitarian disaster in Gaza unfolds against the backdrop of an unrelenting Israeli aggressive war, now in its 455th consecutive day. Constant airstrikes, artillery bombardments, and attacks on civilian homes, schools, and shelters have plunged the area into chaos, with widespread destruction and loss of life.
Since the escalation of violence on October 7, 2023, over 154,000 Palestinians have been killed or injured, most of them women and children. An estimated 10,000 individuals remain missing under the rubble of destroyed buildings, with the death toll expected to climb further. The ongoing siege has also caused a deadly famine, depriving residents of essential food, medicine, and medical supplies.
The Israeli blockade continues to prevent the entry of much-needed humanitarian aid, further worsening the plight of patients and the injured. Hospitals and clinics in Gaza are overwhelmed, operating without adequate equipment or medicine to treat the thousands in need.
Humanitarian organizations are urging immediate action to avert further loss of life and alleviate the suffering of Gaza’s population. The unfolding tragedy highlights the urgent need for a sustainable resolution to end the violence and address the severe humanitarian crisis impacting millions of civilians in Gaza.
