The Palestine Red Crescent Society said only around 700 patients from Gaza have been able to leave the territory for medical treatment abroad since the reopening of the Rafah land crossing, warning that the figure is far below what is needed amid Gaza’s deepening health crisis.
In a statement, the organization described the number of evacuations as “very small” compared with the scale of the humanitarian and medical catastrophe unfolding in the Strip, where the healthcare system continues to collapse after months of war and destruction.
The Red Crescent said more than 18,000 patients remain on waiting lists for urgent treatment outside Gaza, many of them facing serious risks to their lives because of the lack of medical capabilities inside the enclave.
It noted that hospitals in Gaza continue to suffer from severe shortages of specialized medicines and equipment, while many complex surgical procedures can no longer be performed because of damaged facilities and the breakdown of essential services.
The organization warned that ongoing restrictions on patient travel and delays in medical evacuations are worsening the humanitarian crisis and leaving thousands of sick and wounded Palestinians facing an uncertain fate.
Healthcare services across Gaza have been pushed to the brink after extensive Israeli attacks damaged hospitals, depleted supplies, and displaced medical staff and civilians, creating what aid groups describe as one of the most severe health emergencies in the territory’s history.
