The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains “extremely difficult” despite the recent ceasefire, according to Adnan Abu Hasna, media advisor for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
In an interview, Abu Hasna said that only about 30% of the agreed aid shipments are being allowed into Gaza — between 150 and 200 trucks daily — far below what is needed to sustain the population.
He explained that the quantity and type of aid currently entering the Strip fail to meet even the most basic needs of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, most of whom are displaced. This shortfall persists despite a slight increase in truck numbers since the ceasefire took effect.
Abu Hasna revealed that UNRWA has over 6,000 trucks loaded with humanitarian aid waiting at Gaza’s crossings. These trucks carry food supplies sufficient for three months and shelter materials for 1.3 million Palestinians, but Israel continues to block their entry.
He described Gaza’s infrastructure as completely destroyed, including water networks, sewage systems, electricity, and telecommunications — with no noticeable repairs or improvements since the war began.
Abu Hasna urged immediate permission to allow the entry of tents, medical supplies, and spare parts for water and sanitation facilities, calling these steps essential to restore the bare minimum of life-sustaining services in Gaza.
He warned that the health sector is in total collapse, facing severe shortages in medicine, equipment, and staff. He appealed for the urgent entry of specialized medical teams and field hospitals to handle the tens of thousands of emergency cases.
Abu Hasna also cautioned that disease outbreaks are rising, fueled by poor nutrition and water contamination. He said over 90% of Gaza’s residents are suffering from varying degrees of malnutrition.
Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians — particularly in northern Gaza and Gaza City — continue to live in the open after losing their homes entirely, enduring harsh conditions with no adequate shelter or sanitation.
