DayofPal– Palestinian-Jordanian prisoner and resistance fighter Abdullah Barghouti has been facing severe torture and medical neglect in Israeli prison that led to a deterioration in his health, his daughter Tala Barghouti said on a Facebook post.
Tala described in the post the shocking scene her father’s lawyer witnessed during a recent visit to the prison, where Barghouti is incarcerated.
“She came out in tears, unable to speak,” Tala wrote, adding “It wasn’t a normal visit. It was a human shock; my father is being tortured every day, and his dignity is crushed without mercy.”
Abdullah Barghouti, who is serving 67 life sentences, was arrested by Israeli forces in 2003 and has since endured two decades of harsh imprisonment.
According to Tala, Israeli prison guards beat her father for hours every day. He is reportedly removed from his cell block, left alone, and assaulted with iron rods and leather whips. “His bones are broken, and the pain is unbearable,” she said. “He can’t stand or move.”
Barghouti suffers from open wounds and painful infections. Tala said the prison provides no medical treatment. Instead, fellow prisoners try to disinfect his wounds using dish soap, as they have no access to proper supplies or care.
“He can’t lie down to sleep. He sleeps sitting up because of the fractures and pain. His weight dropped to just 70 kilograms,” Tala wrote.
The family is urging immediate intervention. Tala called on the Jordanian government, the Foreign Ministry, and the Jordanian Embassy to take urgent action. “They must visit him, see the torture for themselves, and save him before it’s too late,” she pleaded.
Barghouti was arrested in 2003 while taking his sick daughter to a doctor in Al-Bireh. He was interrogated for three months and later sentenced to what is believed to be the longest prison term in history—67 life sentences for joining the resistance.
He spent 10 years in solitary confinement. Israel subjected him to psychological abuse, including locking him with mentally ill Israelis.
In over 20 years behind bars, his family has only visited him six times. Now, his daughter warns, his life is in real danger.
“He is being tortured every day,” she said. “If no one moves, we will lose him.”
