According to a report by Haaretz, nearly half of the reservists in some units have ignored recent call-ups, raising army leaders’ concerns about the military’s ability to sustain its offensive in Gaza.
Military correspondent Amos Harel cited internal estimates showing a sharp decline in reservist participation. This growing reluctance comes amid a shifting public mood. Recent polls indicate that 70% of Israelis oppose resuming full-scale military operations.
This marks the first time Israel’s army has faced such a widespread crisis in its reserve forces. Analysts said that if the government pushes ahead with plans to escalate its campaign in Gaza, even more soldiers may refuse to serve.
Despite that, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich brushed off concerns, urging reservists to prepare for further military deployments. However, military experts argue that political leaders are failing to grasp the deepening resistance within their own ranks.
Meanwhile, diplomatic maneuvering continues behind the scenes. The U.S. has reportedly engaged in secret backchannel talks with Hamas, facilitated by President Donald Trump’s envoy, Adam Boehler. According to Haaretz, Trump remains open to negotiations, even as he threatens military action.
The American plan reportedly aligns with an Egyptian proposal discussed in Cairo last week, outlining a ceasefire, a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the return of all Israeli prisoners, and the reconstruction of Gaza under a technocratic Palestinian government.
As the Israeli leadership struggles to maintain military cohesion, shifting diplomatic efforts could further reshape the war’s trajectory.
