Israeli Shifts Palestinian-Bedouin Healthcare Funds to House Demolitions

DayofPal– In a controversial budgetary maneuver, the Israeli government has redirected 9 million shekels ($2.4 million) originally earmarked for healthcare services in Palestinian-Bedouin villages to finance the demolition of their homes, Israeli media reported.

The reallocated funds, intended to enhance medical infrastructure, have instead been transferred to the Yoav Unit, a specialized police force tasked with enforcing building demolitions and protecting Israeli demolition crews.

The decision has sparked sharp criticism from rights organizations, with Physicians for Human Rights condemning the move as “a distorted set of priorities.”

The group accused Israeli authorities of intensifying their mechanisms of control and suppression rather than addressing the dire medical needs of these marginalized communities.

“Bedouin villages already suffer from an acute shortage of maternal clinics, health centers, and emergency services. By stripping these essential funds, the government is exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis in favor of expanding its enforcement operations,” the organization stated.

Israeli Minister Amichai Chikli, who oversees the Bedouin Authority, defended the decision, claiming it as part of a broader financial reassessment aimed at ensuring “efficient resource use.”

He further justified the move by asserting that the funds would aid in eliminating “obstacles” to Israeli settlement expansion, referring to government-sanctioned housing projects.

This budget reallocation is part of a broader pattern of financial restructuring that has disproportionately impacted Palestinian-Bedouin communities. Meanwhile, state funding for Israeli police operations and demolition efforts continues to expand.

Since the beginning of 2025, Israeli authorities have executed over 14 demolitions targeting Palestinian homes and structures in the 1948-occupied territories.

Native Palestinians in these areas contend that these demolitions occur without viable housing alternatives, leaving families displaced and vulnerable.

While Israeli officials cite “unauthorized construction” as justification, critics argue that the policy is a concerted effort to erode Palestinian presence and dispossess indigenous communities of their land.

The reallocation underscores the ongoing war over land and rights in these territories, fueling further tensions and raising pressing concerns about the prioritization of state resources.
