Under Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) protection, Israeli settlers broke into Silwan neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem early Tuesday morning, December 27, 2022 and seized a 5-dunum plot of land, according to local sources.
It’s noteworthy that this plot of land is owned by the Greek Orthodox Church, but that the Sumrin family in Silwan has had a contract to cultivate and benefit from the land for the past 70 years.
Israeli Settlers have been trying to take over this plot of land for a while, which prompted the Sumrin family to go to the court to stop the takeover. Meanwhile, sources said that settlers came to the land and started to fence it even before a court ruling is issued.
Palestinian residents attempted to stop the Israeli settlers and IOF from taking over the land, as this led to clashes that resulted in the arrest of three Palestinian youths.
