Israeli Parliament Approves Symbolic Vote to Annex West Bank, Sparking Outcry

Ramallah, In a move that met with outrage from Palestinian leaders and warnings from rights groups, Israel’s parliament has passed a symbolic resolution supporting the annexation of the occupied West Bank, deepening fears that Israel is edging closer to formally dismantling the prospects of a two-state solution.

The vote, held Wednesday in the Knesset, passed by a large margin — 71 lawmakers in favor, 13 opposed — and called for the “application of Israeli sovereignty” over the West Bank, using Israeli terminology for the region: “Judea, Samaria, and the Jordan Valley.”

Though non-binding, the motion marks another step by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right coalition to normalize the idea of annexation — a move considered illegal under international law and seen by much of the world as a death blow to any future Palestinian state.

From Symbolism to Strategy

While the vote carries no immediate legal consequences, analysts say it could pave the way for formal annexation legislation shortly. The motion asserts that annexation would “strengthen the state of Israel, its security, and prevent any questioning of the fundamental right of the Jewish people to peace and security in their homeland.”

The resolution traces back to Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s far-right finance minister and a prominent settler who lives in an illegal settlement. Smotrich has long advocated annexation and holds a powerful role in Israel’s Ministry of Defense, overseeing settlement policy and Palestinian civil affairs in the West Bank.

Palestinian Leaders Condemn the Vote

Palestinian officials were quick to denounce the move. Hussein al-Sheikh, deputy to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, called it “a direct assault on the rights of the Palestinian people” and a blow to peace.

“These unilateral Israeli actions blatantly violate international law and the international consensus regarding the status of Palestinian territories,” al-Sheikh posted on X.

In a statement, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates warned that annexation — symbolic or not — is part of a broader Israeli strategy to entrench occupation and erode Palestinian identity.

The ministry described the motion as “a colonial measure” and said it reinforced a system of apartheid. It also cited a 2024 advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice, which found Israeli practices in the West Bank to be in violation of international law.

A Reality Already Unfolding

While the vote may be declarative, Palestinians say the reality of annexation has already been unfolding for decades. Since Israel occupied the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem in 1967, more than 500,000 Israeli settlers have moved into the West Bank — a population living in violation of international law, alongside nearly 3 million Palestinians.

Settlement expansion has accelerated since the October 2023 war on Gaza, and so has violence. Israeli forces and settlers have intensified their attacks on Palestinian towns and villages, displacing thousands and killing hundreds.

“This is not a symbolic vote,” said one human rights advocate based in Jerusalem. “It reflects the daily reality for Palestinians: land taken, homes demolished, lives upended — with no end in sight.”

Global Silence and Growing Alarm

International voices have largely condemned formal annexation in the past, but the Israeli government appears emboldened by muted responses during the ongoing Gaza war, where over 56,000 Palestinians have been killed, most of them women and children.

“This motion might not be binding in law,” the Palestinian Foreign Ministry said, “but it is binding in intent. It is a green light for more land grabs, more displacement, and a future without freedom for Palestinians.”

As Israel’s right-wing government continues to chip away at internationally recognized borders, the prospect of a sovereign Palestinian state — once the cornerstone of global peace efforts — is fading into a legal fiction.
