DaysofPal- In a move condemned as an assault on Palestinian education and rights, the Israeli occupation forces have officially notified the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) of the closure of its schools in Jerusalem, effective May 8.
The decision affects six UNRWA schools in the city, leaving 950 students facing an uncertain educational future.
Ramadan Taha, head of the Parents’ Committee in Jerusalem, revealed the notification during a statement on Tuesday.
He described the measure as a deliberate attempt to obstruct Palestinians’ access to education and undermine UNRWA’s critical role in the city. “This is a tool for obfuscating ignorance against the Palestinian people in Jerusalem,” Taha said. “It is an assault on students’ right to education and a repressive measure targeting UNRWA.”
The Parents’ Committee is set to meet with UNRWA representatives on Wednesday to discuss potential responses to the decision. However, the looming closures have already sparked fears among families and educators about the long-term impact on students’ academic progress and futures.
Systematic Attacks on UNRWA
The school closure order comes amid escalating pressure on UNRWA, which has faced repeated harassment and threats from Israeli occupation. Just last week, UNRWA reported that its headquarters in East Jerusalem had been deliberately set ablaze, marking another incident in months of systematic incitement against the agency.
In January 2025, UN staff were forced to evacuate the same headquarters after Israeli occupation began implementing laws targeting UNRWA’s operations. These measures followed the passage of two laws by the Israeli Knesset on October 28, 2024, which prohibit UNRWA from conducting any activities in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The laws also revoke privileges previously granted to the agency and ban official contact with it. These restrictions took effect on January 30, further complicating UNRWA’s ability to operate.
Impact on Palestinian Refugees
Established in the aftermath of the 1948 Nakba, UNRWA provides essential aid, healthcare, and education services to millions of Palestinian refugees across the Gaza Strip, the West Bank (including East Jerusalem), and neighboring countries such as Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. Its schools serve as lifelines for thousands of children, offering them not only education but also stability amidst ongoing conflict and displacement.
The closure of UNRWA schools in Jerusalem represents yet another blow to Palestinian communities already grappling with decades of systemic discrimination and occupation. For many families, these institutions are the only available means of securing quality education for their children. Without them, students risk falling behind or being forced out of the educational system entirely.
Warnings of Broader Threats
UNRWA has repeatedly warned that its staff and facilities across the West Bank are increasingly under threat. Israeli occupation forces have justified their actions against the agency by accusing it of bias and alleging ties to armed groups—claims strongly denied by UN officials. Critics argue that these accusations are politically motivated and aimed at dismantling one of the few organizations providing vital support to Palestinians.
The agency views the latest developments as part of a broader campaign to silence its voice and erase its contributions to Palestinian welfare. By targeting UNRWA, Israeli policies risk exacerbating the humanitarian crisis faced by Palestinians while undermining international efforts to uphold their rights.
Calls for International Action
Palestinian leaders and human rights advocates are urging the international community to intervene and protect UNRWA’s mission. They warn that allowing such measures to go unchallenged could set a dangerous precedent, emboldening further attacks on education and other fundamental rights.
For now, the fate of the 950 affected students hangs in the balance. As Ramadan Taha emphasized, “Education is a basic human right, and denying it is an act of aggression against our future generations.”
The coming days will be crucial in determining whether diplomatic or legal avenues can reverse this draconian decision, or if yet another chapter of hardship awaits Jerusalem’s youth.
