DaysofPal- Despite the potential for an environmental disaster, the Israeli occupation is continuing to dispose of waste and debris in Gaza.
The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports that, following the Israeli genocidal war, 61 million tonnes of rubble have resulted.
The Israeli military is reportedly dumping construction waste in Gaza, as revealed by footage obtained by Haaretz.
Israeli Trucks are seen entering Gaza and offloading debris onto the streets, particularly near the Kissufim crossing. This waste includes construction materials and garbage left by the military during a prolonged Israeli war.
Haaretz reports that field commanders decided to discard waste in Gaza, with instructions to allow trucks from private Israeli companies to dispose of waste freely in the area. An Israeli soldier questioned this practice, suggesting waste should be sent to designated disposal sites.
Commanders implied that foreign reconstruction efforts would eventually address the waste left by the military.
A soldier living near Gaza’s crossing voiced concern over accumulating waste, fearing it would remain a permanent fixture.
Another officer noted that some dumped materials, such as iron and concrete blocks, could potentially be repurposed by Hamas.
The UN has warned that the war in Gaza led to significant destruction, with 250,000 buildings damaged or destroyed, generating 61 million tons of debris.
The UN Environment Program stated that around 15 percent of this debris might be contaminated with hazardous materials if not properly managed.
UNEP’s recent assessment found that most of the debris was created in the early months of the conflict. Between April and July, the southern region of Gaza saw the generation of eight million tons of debris.
Inger Andersen, UNEP’s executive director, emphasized that alleviating human suffering in Gaza should be a priority.
She called for restoring essential services and removing debris to save lives and improve food and water security. Andersen warned that continued neglect could lead to lasting environmental damage, impacting the health of future generations in Gaza.
