The Palestinian Prisoners’ Club has reported on Saturday, August 12, 2023, that Israeli occupation forces have recently escalated arrests of wounded Palestinians in the town of Beit Ummar, north of Hebron.
These detainees have been placed under administrative detention, and among them are children.
In a press statement released on Saturday, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club revealed that the latest Palestinian to be arrested is Abi Youssef Abu Maria, an 18-year-old who suffers from a 70% disability in his left hand due to gunshot wounds inflicted by Israeli forces in late November 2022. Abu Maria had undergone several surgical procedures as a result of his injuries.
The majority of those arrested fall within the age range of 16 to 19 years old, and most of them had been previously detained at an early age. Abu Maria’s case is emblematic of this pattern, having been arrested four times before.
On August 9th, Israeli forces arrested Abu Maria after causing widespread damage to his family’s home.
His arrest was carried out in a brutal manner, with soldiers intentionally handcuffing his injured hand behind his back, causing him intense pain according to his mother.
It was noted that a portion of the wounded detainees have been subjected to administrative detention, which exacerbates their suffering.
Not only are they arrested while in need of medical treatment and follow-up care, but they are also arbitrarily detained under the pretext of having a classified file.
Additionally, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club reported that three other wounded Palestinians from Beit Ummar were recently arrested: Hassan Walid Sabarna (17 years old), Mohammad Zuhdi Awad (19 years old), and Sharif Zuhdi Awad (16 and a half years old).
Sharif has already received a verdict, while Hassan and Mohammad were placed under administrative detention.
The Palestinian Prisoners’ Club holds the Israeli occupation fully responsible for the fate of these detainees.
The number of arrests across all Palestinian territories has exceeded 4,400 cases since the beginning of the current year until the end of July 2023.
