In the early hours of Tuesday, Israeli forces carried out a devastating airstrike targeting refugee tents in the Mawasi area of Khan Younis, southern Gaza, resulting in a horrific massacre. According to Palestinian Civil Defense, the bombardment claimed the lives of at least 40 Palestinians, with more than 60 others injured, while many remain missing.
The attack, which struck while most people were asleep, hit the refugee camp with several missiles, destroying between 20 and 40 tents. Over 200 tents had been erected in the area to shelter displaced families fleeing earlier bombings. Civil Defense crews reported that entire families disappeared beneath the sand, with ongoing efforts to locate missing individuals. The sheer force of the explosions left three deep craters in the ground, further complicating rescue operations.
Witnesses described a scene of chaos and devastation, as bodies, many burned beyond recognition, were pulled from the wreckage. The injured and deceased were rushed to hospitals in the southern region, including Al-Nasser Medical Center, the Kuwaiti Field Hospital, and the British Red Cross Field Hospital. Medical personnel are reportedly overwhelmed with the influx of casualties, many of whom suffered severe injuries, including amputations.
Images and videos from the aftermath show a grim picture, with bloodstains and widespread destruction across what was supposed to be a “safe humanitarian zone.” Israeli forces had previously instructed civilians to move to these designated areas, assuring their safety from airstrikes.
This marks yet another atrocity in a series of brutal massacres carried out by Israeli forces in Gaza. In July, a similar attack on the Mawasi region left hundreds dead and wounded, when a fire belt was used to bombard the area.
