DayofPal—The Israeli doctors’ union has reaffirmed that medical professionals cannot participate in carrying out the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners, citing ethical and professional standards.
The statement was made during a National Security Committee meeting in the Knesset on Wednesday, where lawmakers discussed the application of the death penalty and the draft law ahead of its second and third readings.
The union’s representative, who repeatedly emphasized that doctors’ involvement in executions violates professional ethics, was removed from the meeting, sparking tension among attendees.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir expressed hope that the draft law would pass before the next elections. During the session, Knesset member Gilad Kariv of the Democrats sharply criticized Ben Gvir, calling him “a man with a long record of spilling Israeli and Jewish blood in the streets.”
This comes at a time an Israeli delegation is visiting several countries, including the US, to investigate methods for executing Palestinian prisoners.
Israel’s Channel 14 reported that Israeli lawmakers are advancing a bill mandating swift executions, primarily by lethal injection, with no appeals.
The delegation, led by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and accompanied by Israel Prison Service officials, is expected to visit several countries that still enforce capital punishment, including the United States.
According to the broadcaster, the delegation aims to review various execution methods, such as lethal injection and the electric chair, and assess how these procedures are regulated and implemented.
