In a tragic escalation of violence, seven Palestinians, including two children and five women, were killed, and several others were injured on Wednesday afternoon in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) school in Gaza City.
Eyewitnesses reported that Israeli warplanes launched a sudden attack on the Salah al-Din School, located at the Zaharna intersection in Gaza City. The school, which was sheltering hundreds of displaced people, was struck, leading to numerous casualties.
As emergency crews were working at the scene, Israeli aircraft targeted a nearby house, and then, in a chilling repeat, the warplanes struck the school for a second time.
One eyewitness described how civil defense and ambulance crews struggled to rescue the injured and recover the dead with very limited resources.
Preliminary reports from media sources indicated that five bodies were pulled from the rubble of the school, with many others injured, including women and children.
The Palestinian Civil Defense stated that its teams evacuated 15 wounded people from the Salah al-Din School after the Israeli strike, while medical teams and civilian vehicles transported at least three bodies.
However, efforts to complete the rescue operations were abruptly halted as Israeli forces issued a new warning, signaling their intention to strike the school again.
