Israel has been increasingly lobbying members of the US Congress to pressure South Africa into dropping its legal proceedings against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the Israeli genocide in Gaza.
According to an Axios report, Israeli officials are leveraging the recent formation of a new South African coalition government, hoping it will shift its stance on Israel.
They are enlisting U.S. lawmakers to publicly denounce South Africa’s position and are warning of potential repercussions for U.S.-South Africa trade relations.
The Israeli foreign ministry has launched an extensive diplomatic campaign, mobilizing Congress members and Jewish organizations to press South Africa into reconsidering its approach.
The goal is to encourage South Africa to engage in diplomatic dialogue with Israel rather than pursuing legal measures and economic boycotts.
South Africa took ‘Israel’ to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the background of committing genocide in Gaza. The ICJ orders, which has mandated that Tel Aviv prevent acts of genocide and facilitate humanitarian aid for Gaza, has been ignored by ‘Israel’.
