DaysofPal – Israeli courts issued 80 administrative detention orders on Tuesday against Palestinian detainees held in Israeli prisons, most of them from the West Bank and occupied Jerusalem, according to Palestinian prisoner advocacy groups.
In a joint statement, the Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners Club said the orders included both new administrative detention decisions and renewals for detainees already being held under the same policy.
Administrative detention allows the Israeli occupation to hold individuals without charge or trial, and detainees and their lawyers are not permitted to review the evidence against them.
Palestinian rights organizations say the practice violates international humanitarian law.
Under the policy, Israeli occupation claims detainees are held based on secret files that cannot be disclosed, meaning detainees often do not know the charges against them or the length of their imprisonment.
Human rights groups have long criticized the practice, noting that Israel remains one of the few countries that continues to widely employ administrative detention as a security measure in the occupied Palestinian territories.
