DayofPal– Four-month-old Obaida Al-Qarra is fighting for his life in the Kuwait Specialized Field Hospital after surviving a brutal Israeli airstrike that wiped out his entire family in western Khan Younis, southern Gaza.
Obaida was sleeping in his mother’s lab inside a makeshift tent when the airstrike struck. His mother, father, and siblings were all killed instantly. He was found injured, a piece of shrapnel lodged in his knee, becoming the only surviving member of his family.
Doctors at the hospital have confirmed that Obaida also sustained a grave head injury, a shrapnel fragment pierced his skull, causing complete paralysis, loss of hearing and sight, frequent seizures, and a dangerously high fever.
His condition is deteriorating rapidly due to severe malnutrition and worsening dehydration. Recently, he contracted chickenpox, further compounding his fragile state.
“This child has endured more suffering than any human being should in a lifetime,” said one exhausted doctor, adding “We are watching him slip away, and we don’t have the tools to save him.”
The hospital, operating under siege conditions with critical shortages of medicine, electricity, and medical personnel, is appealing to the international community for an immediate medical evacuation to provide Obaida with the advanced care he desperately needs.
Human rights groups have condemned the targeting of civilians and labeled the attack that killed Obaida’s family as a violation of international humanitarian law.
“This is not just a story of war. It’s a story of one baby, alone in the world, robbed of his family, his health, and now, possibly, his future,” said a spokesperson a doctor.
Gaza’s Government Media Office warns of a catastrophic baby formula shortage, saying more than 40,000 infants below one year of age are at risk of a “slow death” due to Israel’s blockade and malnutrition.
Yesterday, Israel’s military body COGAT claimed 120 aid trucks entered Gaza, distributed by the UN and international organisations. However, Gaza residents said most of the trucks were looted by Israel-backed gang before reaching intended warehouses.
