Hamas movement said its political chief Ismail Haniyeh held phone calls with mediators in Egypt and Qatar as well as other regional countries after the deadly Israeli attacks in Gaza earlier on Saturday, in a statement.
Haniyeh underscored that “at a time when Hamas has been dealing positively and responsibly with the latest proposal for a deal to end the aggression against our people, the Israeli position articulated by Netanyahu has been to set up obstacles to prevent reaching an agreement,” Hamas said in a statement.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier that Israel would not give up its “right” to resume the fighting as part of a deal with Hamas. He also argued that the Israeli attack that killed 90 people in al-Mawasi would send a clear message that “Hamas’s days are numbered”.
Hamas added Haniyeh asked the mediators in Egypt and Qatar to “do what is needed with the US administration and others to stop the massacres against our people.
The Palestinian envoy to the UK, Husam Zumlot, has said in a post on X that Israel’s attack on Mawasi is its “response to the ICJ [International Court of Justice] ruling 4 months ago, to the UNSC [Security Council] more than a month ago and to the ongoing ceasefire talks”.
More than 90 people are confirmed killed after Israeli air strikes targeted tents where displaced people were sheltering in Mawasi, a designated “safe zone” in Khan Younis.
