Hamas movement is pressing on ‘Israel’ to lift 17-year blockade on Gaza, coupled with a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza enclave as part of the initial phase of the US-mediated ceasefire proposal, according to Middle East Eye.
According to amendments presented to Egyptian and Qatari intermediaries earlier this week, Hamas is adamant about ending the blockade on Gaza, thereby enabling unhindered movement of people and goods into the enclave.
The imposition of the Israeli land, air, and sea blockade, initiated subsequent to Hamas’s victory in the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections, has resulted in over two million Palestinians enduring living conditions characterized by rights’ organizations as akin to an open-air prison.
US President Joe Biden said on Thursday that he discussed the Gaza ceasefire proposal during the G7 summit and that he hasn’t lost hope, but Has has to step up.
Hamas confirmed several times it won’t go forward with a deal that isn’t consistent with the demands of Palestinians in Gaza.
Asked by reporters if he was confident there will be a ceasefire deal soon, Biden said, “No,” adding, “I haven’t lost hope, but it’s going to be tough. Hamas has… to move.”
