DaysofPal – The Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, announced the killing of its chief of staff, Mohammed Ali Odeh, known as “Abu Amr,” following an Israeli assassination strike that targeted him in northern Gaza on Tuesday evening.
In a statement, the group said Odeh was killed together with his wife and children. The attack also resulted in the deaths and injuries of several civilians, which the Brigades described as a “new crime” within the ongoing genocidal war against the Gaza Strip for more than two and a half years.
Mohammed Ali Odeh was regarded as one of the most prominent senior leaders within the Qassam Brigades. Over many years, he held several military and leadership positions while maintaining a low public profile and largely staying away from media appearances.
The statement said that Odeh held positions in several areas of the organization’s military hierarchy, such as combat operations, weapons production, command of the weapons and combat services division, leadership of the Northern Brigade, and eventually the military intelligence division.
The statement underscored his operational contributions, highlighting his prominent role in the October 7 crossing operation’s success. The group added that he later led defensive battles in northern Gaza during the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation before being appointed chief of staff, succeeding commander Izz al-Din al-Haddad Abu Suhaib.”
The statement noted that Odeh’s killing came on the Day of Arafat and on the eve of Eid al-Adha. The Al-Qassam Brigades emphasized that the targeting of senior commanders would not deter their operations. The leadership affirmed that the loss of their chief reinforces their determination to pursue their established strategy, expressing sustained commitment to the objectives set by their movement over nearly a century.
