Hamas delegation heads to Cairo to advance Gaza ceasefire

DaysofPal- A senior Hamas delegation is expected to arrive in Cairo within the next few hours for discussions regarding the stalled Gaza ceasefire deal, according to a statement from the group on Friday.

The delegation will meet with Egyptian officials to discuss the most recent developments in the ceasefire negotiations, under the leadership of Khalil al-Hayya, a member of Hamas’ political bureau.

The announcement came shortly after Hamas confirmed its agreement to release Israeli soldier Edan Alexander, a U.S. citizen, along with the bodies of four other dual nationals, as part of a proposal from mediators aimed at resuming negotiations.

Hamas emphasized its readiness to engage in negotiations and reach a comprehensive agreement on the second phase of discussions, stressing the importance of holding Israel to its commitments.

On Wednesday, Hamas also announced the beginning of a new round of ceasefire talks, expressing its commitment to a responsible and positive approach, including ongoing discussions with the U.S. envoy.

The group said it hoped this round would result in major progress toward the second round of negotiations, which includes the completion of the prisoner swap, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the end of the aggression.

To recall, the US envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, confirmed that Washington has put forward a proposal that narrows the gaps to extend the ceasefire in Gaza.

In a statement by Witkoff and the US National Security Council, Witkoff said that the proposal includes extending the ceasefire in Gaza beyond Ramadan and the Jewish Passover, and that the proposed extension allows time to negotiate a framework for a permanent ceasefire.
