DaysofPal- Hamas movement has condemned the coordinated campaign targeting UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, Francesca Albanese, calling it “political hypocrisy” by Western governments.
In a press statement on Saturday, the movement said the attacks on Albanese reflect “a premeditated intention to punish her for her firm positions, which stem from conscience, human values, and the spirit and letter of international and humanitarian law.”
Hamas added that the campaign represents “a blatant expression of the political hypocrisy and double standards that govern the conduct of Western capitals when it comes to the fascist occupation entity and occupied Palestine,” and described the pressure on Albanese as “terrorizing every voice that seeks to do justice to our Palestinian people and stand with them.”
The movement also questioned how the Israeli occupation continues to enjoy “ an exceptional status that places it above accountability,” criticizing Western governments for “turning a blind eye to the urgent need to take practical measures to hold occupation leaders accountable for their heinous crimes against humanity.”
The controversy comes as UN officials express concern about attacks on independent human rights experts.
On Friday, Marta Hurtado, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said she was “deeply concerned” about the targeting of the UN’s independent mandate holders.
Several European governments, particularly Germany, have recently criticized Albanese over her work documenting alleged human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territories and for her critical stance toward the Israeli crimes.
