DaysofPal- The Hamas Movement marked today as the first anniversary of the assassination of the prominent Palestinian leader and head of its political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, who was martyred on July 31, 2024, in an Israeli airstrike that targeted his residence in Tehran, Iran.
Haniyeh’s assassination was part of the systematic Israeli campaign to eliminate top leaders of the Palestinian resistance.
Haniyeh left a profound impact on both the Palestinian political landscape and public sentiment, given his symbolic national stature and key leadership role in Hamas and in confronting Israeli occupation.
Born in 1963 in the Al-Shati refugee camp in western Gaza City, Ismail Abdul-Salam Ahmed Haniyeh grew up in poverty, like many Palestinians in the camps.
He studied at UNRWA schools, earned his high school diploma from Al-Azhar Institute, and later graduated with a degree in Arabic literature from the Islamic University of Gaza in 1987.
As a university student, Haniyeh was an active member of the student council and was deeply involved in athletic and social activities.
He worked at the Islamic University and eventually became its dean in 1992. After the release of Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, Haniyeh was appointed head of his office in 1997.
He was arrested several times by Israeli forces and was deported to Marj al-Zuhour in southern Lebanon in 1992 along with around 400 leaders and cadres from Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Upon returning, he assumed senior roles within the movement.
Haniyeh rose to greater prominence in 2006 when he led the “Change and Reform” electoral list, which won a majority in the Palestinian Legislative Council.
He was then tasked with forming the 10th Palestinian government, becoming the first prime minister from Hamas.
Throughout his political career, Haniyeh survived multiple Israeli assassination attempts, where he was injured in an Israeli airstrike in 2003 and faced numerous travel restrictions.
Also, his motorcade came under fire during internal clashes in Gaza in 2006, and his home was targeted repeatedly during Israeli offensives.
Despite these challenges, Haniyeh remained a proponent of national reconciliation with the Palestinian Authority. He agreed to step down as head of the de facto government in Gaza to form a unity government.
In 2017, Haniyeh was elected head of Hamas’s political bureau, succeeding Khaled Meshaal, and he was also re-elected in 2021.
The U.S. State Department designated Haniyeh a “terrorist” in January 2018 during heightened tensions after the Trump administration recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Until his assassination, Haniyeh was a central figure in Palestinian decision-making. He was known for balancing internal and external pressures and political and military priorities, and maintaining communication with regional and international actors to break Gaza’s siege and defend national principles.
On the morning of July 31, 2024, Hamas announced that Ismail Haniyeh had been killed in a surprise Israeli airstrike that struck his residence in Tehran.
He was in Iran to attend the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian. One of his guards also died in the attack.
In a statement, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed that an investigation into the incident was underway, and later Iranian state media confirmed Haniyeh’s martyrdom and the death of his bodyguard.
Today, Palestinians and Hamas supporters around the world mark the solemn anniversary of his martyrdom, reflecting on his enduring legacy and continued influence on the Palestinian resistance.
