Global Sumud Flotilla Gathers in Barcelona Ahead of New Gaza-Bound Mission

Ships participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla have docked in Barcelona as preparations intensify for a second maritime mission aimed at breaking the blockade on Gaza and delivering humanitarian aid.

The initiative, formed by international activists and organizations, is expected to depart on April 12 with significantly expanded participation compared to its previous voyage. Organizers say the flotilla will include around 70 vessels carrying nearly 1,000 volunteers representing approximately 70 countries, marking a major increase from the September 2025 mission.

The flotilla was established as a civilian-led effort to challenge restrictions on Gaza and draw global attention to the humanitarian crisis in the enclave. Participants include activists, aid workers, and volunteers committed to delivering assistance and amplifying calls for international action.

Barcelona has once again become the central departure point for the mission, with Spain expected to contribute the largest number of participants. Organizers describe the operation as both a humanitarian initiative and a form of peaceful protest against the ongoing blockade.

The upcoming voyage follows an earlier attempt in 2025, which involved fewer vessels and participants. That mission faced multiple obstacles, including logistical challenges and external pressures, but organizers say the expanded scale of the current effort reflects growing international support.

In addition to delivering aid, the flotilla seeks to spotlight the worsening conditions in Gaza and mobilize global public opinion. Organizers emphasize that the mission is rooted in nonviolent action and aims to push governments and international institutions to address the crisis more decisively.

Despite the scale and preparation, the mission is expected to face significant risks, including the possibility of interception before reaching Gaza. However, participants say they remain determined to proceed, framing the voyage as a necessary response to what they describe as an ongoing humanitarian emergency.
