DayofPal—Gaza’s sole power generation plant is expected to resume operations after being shut down for more than two years due to Israel’s ongoing war and blockade.
Ali Shaath, head of the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, announced that preparations are underway to restart electricity generation, describing the development as “good news” for the besieged population.
In a statement posted on social media, Shaath said coordination is ongoing with international partners on solar energy initiatives, alongside efforts with electricity providers to restore power as quickly as possible.
No specific timeline or technical details were provided regarding how electricity supplies will be reinstated.
Since October 2023, Israel has cut off electricity to Gaza and blocked the entry of fuel required to operate the power plant, despite a ceasefire that came into effect last October.
Before the war, Gaza had access to roughly 212 megawatts of electricity, less than half of the estimated 500 megawatts needed to ensure round-the-clock power.
The prolonged power outage has had devastating consequences across the Gaza Strip, severely affecting hospitals, water systems, and other essential services.
During the war, Israeli attacks also targeted electricity infrastructure, destroying thousands of kilometers of power lines and thousands of transformers. Gaza’s media office estimates losses in the electricity sector at approximately $1.4 billion.
If restored, electricity generation could provide critical relief to Gaza’s 2.4 million residents, who continue to face dire humanitarian conditions amid widespread destruction and severe shortages of basic necessities.
