DayofPal– Northern Gaza has become a graveyard of dreams, a scarred land where resilience and grief walk hand in hand. For months, the people of this enclave have endured a relentless siege, returning now to a home reduced to dust and devastation.
Proposed and promoted by a group of senior Israeli army reservists, the “Generals’ Plan”, also known as the “Eiland Plan”, involves forcibly displacing the entire population of northern Gaza, and then besieging the area, including halting the entry of humanitarian supplies, in order to starve out anyone left.
The northern landscape of Gaza, once teeming with life, now lies buried beneath rubble, a haunting testament to a war that has reshaped not only the land but the souls of its people. Families return to find their homes obliterated, and their lives uprooted.
Fadi, a father from northern Gaza, returned with his family only to confront the reality of a destroyed home. With nowhere else to turn, he points to a small tent he carried back from southern Gaza, his new reality for 14 people.
“We want nothing from the world,” he says, his voice heavy with exhaustion. “For over a year, we have relied only on Allah.”
The cries of loss echo across Gaza. Mohammad Dahr, displaced for over 14 months, speaks of unshakable hope amidst unimaginable suffering.
“We can’t live like this,” he admits, “but Allah stands by us.” Dahr, like many others, grieves the loss of his home, family, and community. Entire neighborhoods have vanished, leaving behind only memories.
“My home was bombed and disappeared on the seventh day of the war,” he recounts. “But when I saw all of Gaza in ruins, I’m satisfied with Allah’s destiny.”
In the face of tragedy, even children carry the weight of loss. Mosab Muhammad Saleh, a boy who lost his father, returned to find his home reduced to ash. Forced to seek refuge in a school, his resilience shines through as he sings a song of love for Palestine, a poignant reminder of hope amid despair.
The numbers are staggering. Over 47,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza over the past year, the majority women and children. Human rights groups and the United Nations have condemned the ongoing crisis, accusing Israel of collective punishment. Yet amid the destruction, stories of resilience emerge.
An elderly woman from the Saftawy family recalls her return to a home once filled with life. She had hoped to find even the lower floors intact, but all that remained was rubble.
” I was expecting to at least find the lower floors of the house so that my daughters could shelter there, however I found it all in ruins, just rubble,” she reveals.
“It was as if the house had crumbled like biscuits,” she laments, unable to recover even basic belongings. Still, she finds strength in faith. “Praise to Allah, we remain standing.”
Northern Gaza is a shadow of its former self, but within the ruins, its people continue to stand tall, clinging to faith, hope, and the dream of a future free from devastation.
