DaysofPal– At least 40 Palestinians were killed across the Gaza Strip today in a fresh wave of Israeli airstrikes and gunfire, according to medical sources. Among the dead was Osama Balousha, a journalist working for Palestinian media outlets.
Balousha’s death adds to the staggering toll on Gaza’s press corps, as nearly 250 journalists have been killed in the territory since the war began, according to Palestinian authorities. This marks the deadliest conflict for journalists in modern history.
Due to Israel’s ban on foreign reporters entering Gaza, all journalists killed during the war have been Palestinians, many of whom were covering the war on the ground under dangerous and increasingly targeted conditions.
Palestinian officials have accused Israel of deliberately targeting journalists, a claim supported by repeated attacks on media workers and press-marked locations.
One of the most devastating incidents occurred last month when Israeli forces killed five journalists, including four Al Jazeera staff, in what has been described as a “double-tap” strike near Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, a tactic where a second strike follows the first to target rescuers and survivors.
Media watchdogs and human rights organizations have called for independent investigations into the deaths of journalists in Gaza, warning that such targeting represents a grave violation of international humanitarian law.
As the war continues, the toll on Gaza’s civilian population and its local press grows heavier, with journalists paying the ultimate price to document one of the most destructive conflicts of the 21st century.
