DaysofPalestine – The Ministry of Health in Gaza has issued a grave warning regarding the rapidly deteriorating health situation in the besieged enclave, where hundreds of wounded and chronically ill patients are being denied access to life-saving medicines and essential medical supplies.
With border crossings closed and humanitarian aid obstructed by Israeli occupation forces, hospitals across Gaza are operating under increasingly desperate conditions. Medical teams are struggling to provide critical care as resources dwindle.
A Health System on the Verge of Collapse
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health reported that healthcare services in Gaza’s hospitals are being sustained with dangerously low stocks of essential medications and medical equipment. Certain vital drugs are now at imminent risk of running out, severely compromising the ability to treat the wounded and manage chronic illnesses.
According to the ministry, 37% of essential medicines and 59% of medical supplies are currently unavailable, with no immediate prospect of replenishment. The worsening crisis is directly linked to Israel’s closure of all Gaza crossings since 2 March, effectively halting the entry of humanitarian aid, including crucial medical shipments.
Patients with cancer, kidney failure, and heart disease are among the most vulnerable, as their survival depends on access to specialized treatments and medications that are increasingly out of reach due to the blockade.
Medical Staff Battle to Save Lives
The Ministry of Health emphasized that the shortage of medical supplies is critically hampering emergency interventions. Surgical procedures and other life-saving treatments are being delayed or cancelled altogether, as doctors and nurses are left without the tools necessary to carry out their work.
Israeli airstrikes have further crippled the health system by destroying diagnostic imaging equipment, including CT scanners and MRI machines, making the diagnosis and treatment of urgent cases even more challenging.
Compounding the crisis, hospitals are relying on fuel-depleted generators for electricity, with limited access to spare parts due to the ongoing siege. This has placed critical hospital units—including intensive care and neonatal wards—at imminent risk of shutdown.
Escalating Threat to Public Health
The Ministry also raised alarm over the depletion of 42% of routine childhood vaccines, including those for polio, which Israeli authorities continue to block. This has raised the specter of epidemic outbreaks, especially among children already weakened by malnutrition and harsh living conditions.
The ongoing closure of the Rafah crossing has prevented approximately 13,000 patients and wounded individuals from leaving Gaza to receive specialized treatment abroad. For many, this amounts to the loss of their only hope of survival.
Appeals for International Action
The Ministry of Health has made urgent appeals to international bodies and humanitarian organizations to exert pressure on Israeli authorities to allow the entry of medical supplies, field hospitals, and fuel necessary to sustain healthcare operations. It stressed that the continued blockade and systematic destruction of healthcare infrastructure constitute violations of international humanitarian law.
Human rights organizations have condemned these actions as collective punishment, amounting to war crimes under the Geneva Conventions. Despite overwhelming evidence of widespread violations, key international actors have largely failed to hold Israel accountable, enabling policies that many observers now describe as genocidal.
A Deepening Humanitarian Catastrophe
As the Israeli blockade persists and medical supplies run out, Gaza’s humanitarian crisis continues to intensify. Cancer patients endure agonizing pain without pain relief; children are left vulnerable to preventable diseases; and critically injured individuals are fighting for survival in collapsing hospitals.
The resumption of Israel’s military offensive on 18 March, following a two-month truce, has only deepened the crisis. With medical facilities in ruins and doctors operating under harrowing conditions, families are being forced to witness the preventable deaths of loved ones.
A Global Moral Obligation
The unfolding health catastrophe in Gaza serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for global action. Without the immediate lifting of the blockade, the delivery of humanitarian aid, and accountability for those responsible, the loss of innocent lives will continue. For Gaza’s population, mere survival has become an uphill battle—one that cannot be won without the intervention of the international community.
