DaysofPal- The Gaza Municipality has issued a stark warning about the dire consequences of the ongoing halt in energy and fuel supplies, exacerbated by the Israeli closure of crossings and threats to cease pumping water through the Mekorot pipeline.
In a statement released on Sunday, the municipality emphasized that these arbitrary measures risk paralyzing essential services, cutting off life and water supplies, and deepening the humanitarian and health catastrophe gripping the city.
The cessation of energy supplies is threatening a major disruption in the operation of water and sanitation facilities, as well as other critical services.
These systems rely heavily on fuel to function, and without it, they face imminent collapse. The municipality warned that this paralysis could have catastrophic effects, further worsening an already precarious situation caused by Israeli aggression and blockades.
A key concern raised by the municipality is the reliance on the Mekorot pipeline, which currently provides approximately 70% of Gaza City’s daily water needs.
A halt in the flow of water from this pipeline would lead to severe dehydration among residents, endangering human life, deteriorating public health, and increasing the likelihood of disease outbreaks.
With over two million people residing in the Strip, the implications of such a crisis are staggering.
Appeal for International Intervention
In light of the escalating emergency, the Gaza Municipality has called on international organizations to urgently intervene and save lives.
It urged global powers to pressure Israeli occupation into respecting international laws and conventions, ensuring the uninterrupted supply of energy and water resources without imposing additional obstacles.
“The Israeli crimes and actions are not just punitive; they are life-threatening,” the statement read. “We appeal to the world to act swiftly before the situation spirals out of control.”
Escalating Tensions
The current crisis comes after the expiration of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza on March 2, when Israeli occupation closed the Kerem Shalom crossing—the sole entry point for humanitarian aid and fuel—citing Hamas’ refusal to accept a US proposal for a temporary ceasefire during Ramadan and the Jewish Passover holiday.
This decision has effectively choked off vital supplies needed to sustain basic living conditions in the besieged territory.
Israeli occupation’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been reluctant to initiate the second phase of the agreement, prioritizing the release of more Israeli prisoners held in Gaza without fulfilling reciprocal commitments, such as ending the genocidal war and fully withdrawing forces from the Strip.
Instead, Netanyahu seeks to extend the first phase of the exchange deal to secure the largest possible number of Israeli prisoners without offering any concessions or adhering to the military and humanitarian obligations outlined in the agreement.
This approach reflects broader political calculations aimed at appeasing hardline factions within his government.
However, such tactics only serve to prolong suffering and deepen mistrust between parties.
A Looming Humanitarian Disaster
As the blockade persists and vital resources dwindle, the people of Gaza find themselves teetering on the edge of another humanitarian disaster.
Without immediate action to restore energy and water supplies, the consequences will be felt not only in terms of thirst and disease but also in the erosion of hope for a better future.
The Gaza Municipality’s warnings underscore the urgent need for international intervention to hold Israeli occupation accountable for its obligations under international law.
Failure to do so risks condemning millions of innocent civilians to prolonged suffering, perpetuating cycles of violence, and undermining prospects for lasting peace in the region.
