DaysofPal- Four European countries have condemned Israeli endeavors to issue proposed legislation that would impose the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners, expressing deep concern over its potential consequences.
In a joint statement issued on Monday, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Italy voiced alarm over the Israeli parliament’s National Security Committee approving the draft law.
The statement warned that the legislation could significantly increase the likelihood of the death penalty being carried out in Israeli-occupied territories, describing capital punishment as an inhumane and degrading practice that fails to serve as a deterrent.
“We oppose the death penalty in all circumstances and wherever it is applied,” the countries said, urging decision-makers in the Israeli Knesset and the Israeli government to abandon the proposal.
The Israeli National Security Committee had earlier approved the draft law after introducing amendments, advancing it for the second and third readings required for final passage, according to Israeli media reports. Details of the amendments have not been disclosed.
According to Palestinian and Israeli human rights organizations, more than 9,300 Palestinians are currently held in Israeli prisons, including around 350 children and 66 women.
These groups report that detainees face conditions including torture, starvation, and medical neglect, which have led to the deaths of dozens of prisoners.
The proposed legislation has drawn increasing international scrutiny amid broader concerns about the treatment of Palestinian detainees and the potential legal and humanitarian implications of implementing capital punishment.
