DaysofPal- US President-elect Donald Trump has expressed his desire for a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas over Gaza before his inauguration on January 20, according to Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Mohamed Al Thani.
In a televised statement on Wednesday, Al Thani confirmed that Trump had made his intention clear. “Yes, he made that clear,” the Qatari PM said, adding that the president-elect wanted to see the ongoing conflict resolved before taking office.
Al Thani further revealed that Trump’s team had conveyed a strong message about the urgency of resolving the Gaza crisis.
“We had heard this from his team, at least, as I recall the conversations that I had with them, that they want this to be resolved now,” he explained.
The Qatari Prime Minister, a central player in the ongoing negotiations, refrained from offering specific details, emphasizing the need to protect the diplomatic efforts underway.
“We are trying our best. We’ve been doing our utmost,” he said.
Al Thani reiterated that Qatar was working tirelessly to stabilize the region and resolve the situation in Gaza.
“We hope to get over this situation before the president (Trump) comes to the office, because we have priorities to stabilize the situation and restore regional security,” he added.
Earlier mediation attempts, involving the US, Egypt, and Qatar, to broker a ceasefire and negotiate a prisoner swap between Israel and Hamas have faltered, largely due to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s refusal to halt the ongoing military campaign in Gaza. The war has resulted in the deaths of approximately 45,000 Palestinians, with over 105,000 injured and nearly two million displaced, according to Palestinian authorities.
The official death toll announced by Palestinian authorities, which the UN considers credible, may be a conservative estimate, according to analysts, who believe the real number may be closer to 200,000.
