Doctors Without Borders Mourns Tenth Staff Member Killed in Israeli Attack

DaysofPal- In a devastating announcement, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) confirmed the death of its tenth employee in Gaza, highlighting the escalating toll on humanitarian workers amid relentless Israeli airstrikes.

The victim, identified as Alaa Abdel Salam Ali Okal , was killed in an attack on his residence in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza Strip, on the morning of March 18.

A Life Cut Short

According to MSF, Alaa Okal joined the organization in September 2024 and quickly became an integral part of their team. At just 29 years old, he played a critical role in supporting the delivery of medical care at the MSF field hospital in Deir al-Balah—a lifeline for countless Palestinians in dire need of treatment amidst the ongoing conflict.

The airstrike that claimed Okal’s life also killed hundreds of others after Israel occupation resumed its large-scale bombardment across the Gaza Strip earlier this week. In a statement released by MSF on Friday, the organization expressed profound sorrow over the loss of their colleague.

“With deep regret, we report the death of our colleague, Alaa Okal,” the statement read. “He was killed by Israeli occupation forces alongside hundreds of others shortly after the resumption of Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip.”

A Grim Milestone

Okal’s death marks a grim milestone for MSF, with ten of its staff members now having perished in Gaza since the war erupted following events on October 7, 2023. Each casualty underscores not only the immense risks faced by aid workers operating in conflict zones but also the apparent disregard for civilian lives and humanitarian personnel during this protracted crisis.

MSF condemned the targeting of civilians and aid workers, emphasizing that such acts violate international humanitarian law. “Our colleagues are dedicated to saving lives under unimaginable conditions,” the organization stated. “Their sacrifice is a testament to their commitment to humanity, even as they face unimaginable dangers themselves.”

Humanity Under Fire

The killing of Alaa Okal has sent shockwaves through the global humanitarian community. It serves as yet another stark reminder of the perilous environment in which aid organizations operate in Gaza. With Israeli airstrikes intensifying and no safe havens available for civilians or humanitarians, the already dire situation continues to deteriorate.

Okal’s untimely death comes amid reports of widespread destruction across Gaza, including hospitals, schools, and residential areas.

Humanitarian infrastructure—already stretched beyond capacity—is being decimated, leaving thousands without access to essential services like healthcare, clean water, and food.

Calls for Accountability

MSF reiterated calls for accountability and protection for both civilians and humanitarian workers in Gaza. “We urge all parties involved in this conflict to respect international humanitarian law and ensure the safety of those providing lifesaving assistance,” the organization said.

However, the repeated targeting of civilians and aid workers raises troubling questions about compliance with these laws. Critics argue that continued impunity for violations perpetuates the cycle of violence and suffering endured by Palestinians in Gaza.

Remembering Alaa Okal

Colleagues remember Alaa Okal as a compassionate and tireless advocate for his people. His dedication to alleviating the suffering of others made him a beacon of hope in one of the world’s most challenging environments. Yet, like so many before him, his life was tragically cut short while serving humanity.

As MSF mourns the loss of its tenth staff member, the organization vows to continue its mission despite the mounting risks. But it warns that without urgent action to protect civilians and aid workers, the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza will only worsen.
