DayofPal- The UN Human Rights Office expresses growing concern that the actions of the Israeli military in North Gaza “may be causing the destruction of the Palestinian population through death and displacement,” mainly in areas like Jabalia, Beit Lahiya, and Beit Hanoun.
The OHCHR also noted that Israeli authorities blocked all essential supplies from entering northern Gaza between October 1 and 14.
“After October 15, a token amount of aid seems to have entered the North, but this does not commensurate with the needs of the population.”
The UN office also stated that while the army instructed people to evacuate northern Gaza, it simultaneously continued to bomb and attack the area, creating a perilous situation for civilians trying to escape.
It further stated that it has received reports of Palestinians being targeted as they attempted to flee. Israeli troops have destroyed residential buildings and attacked schools that are being used as shelters.
The Israeli military has also resumed assaults on two of the three major hospitals in northern Gaza. Rescue teams and medical personnel continue to report restrictions and both direct and indirect attacks by the Israeli military, which are obstructing lifesaving efforts.
Israel has cut internet services in northern Gaza since October 19, and at least three Palestinian journalists have been killed in the past two weeks, restricting the flow of information regarding living conditions in the area, according to the UN statement.
The OHCHR said that reports indicate that numerous Palestinian men are being detained by the IDF, raising concerns about the possibility of arbitrary detention, torture, and other forms of mistreatment, especially in light of previous violations documented by the UN Human Rights Office. Israel must quickly disclose the identities of all individuals in custody and guarantee their access to legal representation and family members.
In a statement released last week, the UN depicted a grim picture of the situation in Gaza, saying that “the level of suffering in Gaza defies our ability to capture it in words or even to comprehend its scale.”
