DaysofPal – A new investigative report by CNN has uncovered evidence that Israeli bulldozers buried the bodies of Palestinian victims in the Gaza Strip during the past two years of the ongoing war. The investigation, based on high-resolution footage, satellite imagery, and testimonies from experts and officials, raises serious concerns over violations of international humanitarian law.
Footage Shows a Body Buried Twice
The centerpiece of the investigation is a video showing an Israeli bulldozer near the Zikim crossing in northern Gaza dragging the wrapped body of a Palestinian across the ground before burying it under soil. Minutes later, a Red Cross team arrives at the site, exhumes the same body, and transfers it in a designated body bag.
According to Israeli sources cited in the report, the event was part of an intelligence operation to locate the remains of Israeli soldiers killed during the war. However, they did not explain why the body of a civilian was present at the excavation site, nor why it had been buried haphazardly before the Red Cross team arrived.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed it had no prior knowledge that the body was already buried when its team reached the location. Its role, it said, was limited to receiving remains that were “found,” with no involvement in preparing the site or supervising the excavation.
Analysis Points to Organized Operations, Not Random Incidents
CNN synchronized the ground footage with aerial videos and satellite images taken the same day. The team pinpointed the location to an area a few hundred meters from the separation fence near the Zikim crossing.
The analysis revealed multiple Israeli bulldozers and engineering units operating at the site over several days, suggesting a systematic operation rather than an urgent or spontaneous response. Satellite images also showed that the location had often been crowded with civilians during aid distributions, raising additional fears that the site may contain other victims.
Two experts in international humanitarian law interviewed by CNN stated that burying bodies with a bulldozer, without recording identity details, documenting visible markings, or establishing the cause of death, constitutes a clear breach of the rules governing the treatment of the dead in armed conflict.
One expert explained that any force retrieving a body must record its location, photograph the remains, document identifying markers, and notify families through proper medical channels. Burying and then immediately exhuming a body, he said, reflects “a complete absence of humanitarian standards.”
Questions of Possible Scene Manipulation
Palestinian officials told CNN they suspect Israeli forces “may have attempted to create the impression of finding soldiers’ remains” or to obscure traces of previous killings. The investigation found that the body shown in the video had already been wrapped and prepared for transport before being dragged into the pit, raising further questions.
Military analysts also noted that dragging and reburying a body is inconsistent with professional remains-recovery protocols, which generally involve careful lifting, not burial before retrieval.
Families of Palestinians who have been missing for months told CNN that the footage amplified their grief and fear. Some expressed terror at the thought that their relatives’ remains may be moved, buried, or mishandled without their knowledge.
Human rights experts warn that such practices could amount to serious violations of international humanitarian law, particularly if carried out without operational necessity or proper documentation.
