DaysofPal- Amnesty International has welcomed the newly announced truce between the Israeli occupation and Palestinian factions as a “cruelly overdue” step after years of devastation in Gaza, but warned that any ceasefire will be meaningless unless it brings an end to the Israeli “unlawful occupation, apartheid and genocide” against the Palestinian people.
In a strongly worded statement, Amnesty Secretary-General Agnes Callamard said the truce comes after “two years of unimaginable suffering” for Palestinians in Gaza and “will not erase all they have endured.”
She added that the humanitarian catastrophe in the enclave was a direct result of Israeli policies that amount to collective punishment and systematic oppression.
“The truce is cruelly overdue after two years of suffering,” Callamard said.
“But it will not erase the horror Palestinians have lived through. For any lasting ceasefire to succeed, it must include an immediate stop to the Israeli genocide and concrete steps to dismantle the apartheid system that sustains this occupation.” She added.
Callamard called on the Israeli occupation to lift its years-long blockade on Gaza and allow the unhindered flow of humanitarian aid, food, fuel, and medical supplies into the devastated territory.
She described the blockade, imposed since 2007, as “suffocating” and “a form of collective punishment prohibited under international law.”
The Amnesty chief also urged that any peace process following the truce must ensure justice and accountability for victims of what the organization has described as atrocity crimes.
She sharply criticized the political framework currently guiding negotiations, often referred to as the “Trump peace plan”, saying it “falls woefully short” and “fails to demand justice, reparations, or accountability for perpetrators of war crimes.”
Amnesty’s remarks come amid cautious optimism over the ceasefire deal, which international mediators have praised as a chance to end the bloodshed and begin rebuilding Gaza.
