Amnesty International has issued a stark warning to the United States, accusing it of complicity in war crimes through its continued support and arms transfers to the Israeli occupation. This warning comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visits Washington.
In a recent statement, the human rights organization highlighted that the US is “on notice of the government of Israel’s unlawful use of US-origin weapons, including in war crimes, and will be complicit in further violations committed with these weapons.”
Paul O’Brien, the executive director of Amnesty International USA, emphasized the gravity of the situation. “The US government has been presented with ample evidence from experts around the world that US-origin arms have been used in war crimes and unlawful killings by the Israeli government,” O’Brien stated. “Continued weapons transfers will make the US complicit in violations of international law committed with these arms.”
Amnesty International underscored that countries providing arms to governments or armed groups that breach international law are not only failing to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law but are also aiding in the commission of “internationally wrongful acts.”
The rights group further stressed that companies involved in manufacturing and exporting arms bear a significant responsibility to ensure respect for human rights and international humanitarian law throughout their value chains.
