DaysofPal- Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, stated that “Israel” has killed more journalists since 7 October 2023 than were killed during World Wars I and II.
Since 7 October 2023, the Israeli occupation has waged a systematic campaign against journalists in Gaza as part of the ongoing genocide, claiming the lives of 247 journalists, according to the government media office report.
Many print newspapers covered their front pages in black, while online media displayed solidarity banners, television channels aired footage, and radio stations broadcast voice messages as part of an international campaign organized by Reporters Without Borders and Avaaz to support Palestinian journalists in Gaza and condemn Israeli crimes against them.
The campaign issued an urgent warning: “At this rate of journalist killings by the Israeli army, soon there will be no one left to report on Gaza and inform the world of what is happening.”
It was joined by 257 media outlets from more than 50 countries.
The organizations called for the protection and urgent evacuation of Palestinian journalists who wish to leave the Strip, an end to the Israeli occupation’s impunity for crimes against the press, and guaranteed access for international journalists to Gaza.
Many global newspapers participated, including the British Guardian, which dedicated its editorial to the massacre of journalists, emphasizing that the Israeli occupation seeks to prevent the world from seeing what is happening in Gaza, and that the current conflict is the deadliest attack on the media in modern history.
The names of the fallen journalists were also published to remind the world of their sacrifices, having worked under harsh conditions of hunger and exhaustion to convey the truth.
