DaysofPal- The “Freedom Flotilla” has marked a significant milestone in its journey toward the Gaza Strip. The number of participating vessels anchored at the Augusta Yacht Harbor reached 65 before the fleet completed its final port formalities and began its gradual ascent into the Mediterranean Sea late Monday afternoon.
Once at sea, the flotilla was joined by a Greenpeace-affiliated ship, which signaled its support for the mission.
As the boats left the port, activists on board chanted “Free Palestine” and lit flares, creating a charged and emotional atmosphere. Participants bid farewell to one another with the phrase, “See you in Gaza,” expressing hope of reaching the besieged coastal enclave.
Ali Deniz, a Turkish activist who joined the flotilla from Barcelona, described the moment as one filled with enthusiasm. He said the participants had experienced similar energy in Spain and voiced confidence that they would reach Gaza and meet children there.
Italian activist Martina highlighted the resilience of the Palestinian people, stating that the flotilla’s mission is to stand in service of them. She criticized governments for failing to act, saying this prompted activists to organize independently and mobilize a large number of vessels.
Tom, a 19-year-old German activist and one of the youngest participants, said his decision to join the flotilla was driven by his opposition to his country’s stance, which he considers complicit in the events unfolding in Palestine.
He stressed that injustice and human rights violations cannot be accepted, adding that he believes a genocide is taking place in full view of the world, leaving him unable to remain silent.
The flotilla’s departure marks a renewed attempt by international activists to draw attention to the situation in Gaza and challenge restrictions imposed on the territory.
