DaysofPal- Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, Director of Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza, warned on Thursday that the Gaza Strip urgently needs the entry of caravans and safe heating supplies to confront the severe cold, stressing that any further delay will lead to a rise in child fatalities.
Abu Salmiya said that a one-month-old infant, Saeed Asaad Abdeen, died as a result of a sharp drop in temperatures. He noted that the number of deaths arriving at hospitals due to extreme cold has risen to 13.
“Children in Gaza are being subjected to death by tanks, cold, and disease all at once,” Abu Salmiya said, adding that 55 percent of essential medicines are currently unavailable in the Gaza Strip.
The worsening humanitarian situation comes amid continued Israeli violations and siege under the ceasefire agreement in effect since October 10 and its humanitarian protocol, according to Gaza’s Government Media Office .
These commitments include allowing the entry of shelter materials, 300,000 tents, and mobile housing units.
Heavy rainfall has further compounded the crisis, flooding large numbers of displacement tents across various parts of Gaza, particularly in low-lying areas.
The flooding has intensified the suffering of thousands of displaced families already living in extremely harsh humanitarian conditions amid severe weather and the ongoing consequences of the offensive.
The situation, medical officials warn, is placing Gaza’s already strained healthcare system under additional pressure, as vulnerable groups, especially infants and children, face life-threatening conditions due to exposure and lack of adequate shelter.
