After Two Years Apart, Evacuated Gaza Toddlers Reunite With Their Families

DaysofPal- In a scene that offered a brief reprieve from the overarching tragedy of the region, eight Palestinian toddlers were reunited with their families in Gaza this week. These children, who began their lives as premature infants in the neonatal ward of al-Shifa Hospital, were evacuated under Israeli genocide more than two years ago. Their return marks a significant humanitarian milestone in a territory where family structures have been systematically dismantled by years of conflict.

The toddlers were part of a group of 25 infants moved from Gaza City in November 2023 as Israeli forces stormed the al-Shifa medical complex. Following their evacuation, the infants received life-saving treatment in Egypt, while their parents remained in Gaza, enduring months of displacement and bombardment without knowing if their children had survived.

A Bittersweet Reunion in Rafah

The reunion, coordinated by the Palestine Red Crescent Society and medical staff, took place in Rafah on Monday. For many parents, it was the first time they had held their children since the earliest days of theIsraeli genocide. Samer Lulu, whose daughter Kinda was among the returnees, described the moment as the most important of his life, though his joy was tempered by the grim reality of the present.

“Our feelings are mixed with pain because of the reality we live in, an uncertain future,” Lulu told reporters. “We hope the future of our children will not be filled with the tragedy or suffering they faced at the beginning of their lives.”

The medical journey for these infants was fraught with peril. During the initial siege of al-Shifa, doctors struggled to keep them alive amid severe shortages of antibiotics, specialized food, and medical solutions.

Mohammad Zaqout, director general of hospitals in the Palestinian Ministry of Health, noted that these essential supplies were frequently blocked from reaching the facility, necessitating the high-risk evacuation to the south and eventually across the border.

The Fragmented State of Gaza’s Children

While these eight families have been made whole, the broader landscape for children in the territory remains dire. A report released this week by the International Rescue Committee (IRC) warns that the prolonged Israeli assault is “reshaping family structures,” leaving an increasing number of children without parental care.

“Children in Gaza have endured immense loss,” said Ulrike Julia, child protection coordinator for the IRC. “Many have been separated from their parents during displacement or after losing family members to the violence.” While local communities have stepped in to provide care, the IRC warns that these informal arrangements are unsustainable without significant and consistent international support.

The return of the toddlers comes at a time of continued volatility. Despite a nominal ceasefire in place since October 2025, the Gaza Health Ministry reports that near-daily Israeli strikes continue to claim lives across the coastal enclave. Just as these families were reuniting, new reports emerged of strikes in Jabalia and Khan Younis, underscoring the “difficult reality” cited by the returning parents.

For mothers like Ola Hijji, who was separated from her son Sulaiman immediately after an emergency caesarean section at eight months pregnant, the reunion is a “beautiful feeling.” However, for thousands of other families in Gaza, the search for missing relatives and the struggle to protect the next generation continues in an environment where safety remains elusive.
