DaysofPAL- More than 2,800 Palestinian police personnel have been killed by Israeli occupation forces (IOF) in Gaza since the start of the Israeli genocidal war, including dozens after the ceasefire took effect, according to local officials who describe the attacks as part of a systematic effort to dismantle the enclave’s civilian infrastructure.
Ismail Al-Thawabta, Director General of the Government Media Office in Gaza, said in a briefing that documented data points to a dangerous escalation in the targeting of Palestinian police forces by the IOF.
He stated that direct attacks since the outbreak of the war have resulted in the deaths of over 2,800 police officers, in what he described as a clear violation of legal protections afforded to civilian personnel under international law.
Despite a ceasefire agreement entering into force in October 2025, Al-Thawabta said Israeli forces have continued to carry out strikes, with dozens of police personnel reportedly killed during the truce period.
He added that these incidents reflect ongoing violations and a failure to adhere to the terms of the agreement, constituting serious breaches of international humanitarian law.
According to Al-Thawabta, at least 10 additional police officers have been killed amid the recent escalation linked to the broader regional war by the United States and Israeli occupation against Iran, signaling an expansion in the scope and intensity of attacks.
Al-Thawabta described the targeting of police forces as part of a deliberate policy aimed at weakening Gaza’s civil structure and destabilizing internal security.
“This targeting is intended to spread chaos and disrupt daily life by striking the entity responsible for maintaining public order,” he said, noting the already severe humanitarian conditions in the territory.
He emphasized that, despite the losses, police units continue to operate with limited resources, carrying out their duties and attempting to maintain basic services for civilians.
The latest incident occurred at dawn on Sunday, when an airstrike hit a police checkpoint in the Al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, killing eight people, including police officers.
The strike follows at least four similar attacks targeting police personnel in the past month alone, which together have killed dozens.
Al-Thawabta said that mediators and parties overseeing the ceasefire are being regularly informed of alleged violations through detailed daily reports documenting incidents on both individual and cumulative levels.
He called for increased international efforts to hold those responsible accountable and to halt what he described as ongoing violations against civilian institutions.
The continued targeting of police forces, he warned, risks further eroding public order and deepening the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where hundreds of thousands of displaced residents already face dire living conditions.
