DaysofPal- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that Turkey is working to send prefabricated housing units to the Gaza Strip to shelter displaced Palestinians, despite opposition from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Speaking during a cultural awards ceremony in Istanbul, Erdogan said Ankara has sought the involvement of the United Nations and Western countries to facilitate the delivery of prefabricated homes to Gaza, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians remain displaced.
“We want to send prefabricated houses to our Palestinian brothers and sisters in Gaza, and we have asked for the intervention of the United Nations and the West,” Erdogan said. “But the pharaoh called Netanyahu does not care about these matters at all and refuses to accept them.”
Erdogan reaffirmed Turkey’s solidarity with the Palestinian people, praising what he described as their continued resilience and spirit of resistance despite the severe humanitarian conditions.
“I extend my feelings of solidarity to all the Palestinian people who preserve their spirit of resistance and steadfastness no matter the circumstances,” he said.
His remarks come as humanitarian organizations warn of an acute shelter crisis in Gaza.
He noted that the Governmental Operations Room for Emergency Interventions has stated that the enclave urgently requires approximately 200,000 prefabricated housing units to provide safe shelter and mitigate risks to civilians.
Recent winter storms and successive low-pressure systems have worsened conditions for displaced families across Gaza, with strong winds tearing apart tents and heavy rains flooding makeshift shelters.
Many families have been left without sleep as they struggle to secure their tents and belongings amid harsh weather.
Estimates indicate that more than 250,000 displaced Palestinians have been affected by severe weather conditions, out of approximately 1.5 million people currently living in tents or rudimentary shelters that offer little protection from rain, cold, and strong winds.
