Gaza City — A two-month-old infant died Saturday evening from severe cold in Gaza City, marking the second such tragedy in a single day as freezing temperatures grip the war-torn enclave.
Medical sources confirmed the death of Mohammad Wissam Abu Harbeed, citing hypothermia brought on by the plummeting temperatures as the cause.
Earlier that same day, another newborn, Mahmoud Al-Aqra, just one week old, died in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, under similar conditions.
Both infants were victims of the bitter winter that has descended on Gaza, where thousands of displaced families are living in makeshift tents with little to no heating.
Large parts of Gaza are currently experiencing extreme cold, compounding an already dire humanitarian crisis. Displaced families, many of whom lost their homes in the ongoing war, lack basic winter essentials such as blankets, heating devices, and warm clothing.
The humanitarian catastrophe continues to escalate as Israeli bombardments and blockade measures have devastated Gaza’s infrastructure and severely limited the entry of fuel and humanitarian aid. The destruction of homes and the collapse of essential services have left tens of thousands vulnerable—particularly children and the elderly—who now face serious health risks as each new cold front arrives.
The death of these infants underscores the urgency of addressing the mounting needs of Gaza’s displaced population, who are battling not only the aftermath of war but now the unforgiving chill of winter without proper shelter or relief.
