DaysofPal- Palestinian journalists marked Journalist Loyalty Day this year under exceptional and unprecedented circumstances, citing two consecutive years of war and the systematic targeting of media workers by Israeli forces, said the Government Media Office in Gaza.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the office said the ongoing attacks on journalists and media institutions are intended to silence independent reporting, suppress the truth, and prevent documentation of events in Gaza from reaching the international community.
The statement noted that December 31 is observed annually as a national occasion to reaffirm solidarity with Palestinian journalists, who it said have continued to carry out their professional and national responsibilities with determination and integrity despite extreme risks and hardship.
According to the Media Office, Palestinian journalists in 2025 served as the “first line of defense for truth,” documenting attacks and reporting directly from the field.
It said journalists paid a heavy price for this role, facing loss of life, injury, arrest, and threats to their personal safety while performing their duties.
The office reported that 56 journalists were killed in 2025 while working, bringing the total number of journalists killed since the start of the war to 257.
It also said three journalists remain missing, more than 420 have been injured, and at least 50 have been arrested and subjected to abuse, describing these actions as violations of international law and conventions protecting journalists.
The statement said the figures demonstrate what it called a systematic campaign to target Palestinian journalists through killing, intimidation, and detention in an effort to silence the Palestinian narrative.
The Government Media Office pledged to continue advocating for journalists’ rights and to pursue legal and media action against the Israeli occupation over alleged crimes against media workers until accountability is achieved.
It also paid tribute to all Palestinian journalists, those killed, wounded, detained, and those still reporting from inside Palestine and abroad, stressing that, despite the losses, journalism would continue and that the pursuit of truth would endure despite violence and repression.
