DaysofPal- Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory, has called for “Israel” to be suspended from the UN General Assembly and for the imposition of a broad cultural and political boycott, accusing the Israeli occupation of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip over the past two years.
In an interview with Turkey’s Anadolu Agency in London, Albanese said that efforts to suppress facts would ultimately fail, insisting that the Israeli occupation “cannot continue to be treated as a normal member of the United Nations.”
She condemned Israel’s ongoing participation in international cultural forums, including the Eurovision Song Contest planned for 2026, arguing that such involvement is incompatible with the gravity of the alleged violations in Gaza.
Albanese noted that Eurovision has become one of the first prominent international arenas where meaningful pressure or boycott efforts against Israel have begun to emerge.
Albanese stressed that cultural boycotts alone are insufficient and must be paired with firm political and legal actions at the global level.
She said that the Israeli occupation has been responsible for systematic human rights violations for many years, adding that the past two years have marked an unprecedented intensification of violence.
Describing the Israeli occupation as an unlawful occupying power and an apartheid state, Albanese pointed out that the country is currently the subject of legal cases before both the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice.
She called on the international community to take much stronger action to hold the Israeli occupation accountable, urging sustained public mobilization and political pressure to bring an end to what she characterized as continuing crimes.
“Popular movements, combined with states’ commitment to legal and moral principles, can generate a ripple effect,” Albanese said, expressing hope that such efforts would help stop Israeli violations in the near future.
