Two Months On, Gaza’s ‘Calm’ Masks an Ongoing Catastrophe

Gaza Genocide Enters Day 720: Dozens Killed Overnight in New Israeli Massacres

DaysofPal – Two months have passed since a long-awaited ceasefire took hold in Gaza, yet the battered enclave remains locked in a cycle of crises with no clear path to relief.

The noise of gunfire has diminished compared to the peak of the war, when destruction and death overwhelmed daily life, but this quieter phase is only an echo of a population still living under immense strain.

Despite the relative reduction in fighting, the consequences of the war remain everywhere. Destruction continues to expand as Israeli ceasefire violations persist, and fear and grief remain etched on faces that have adapted to life beneath constant danger. The damage is not limited to homes and public infrastructure; it has seeped into the hearts and minds of residents, stripping away what little hope remained.

Where streets once bustled with life, they now lie drained and fragile. Water and electricity are scarce. Children struggle to obtain an education in damaged or makeshift schools.

Doctors operate under extreme pressure with dwindling medical supplies. Across Gaza, people continue searching for a semblance of normalcy but find themselves trapped in conditions that appear without end.

Some residents allowed themselves a brief moment of hope after the ceasefire. Yet reality has firmly held them in place. That observation is not merely the sentiment of sympathizers; it is consistently documented by international human-rights organizations and global media.

A Dangerous Illusion of “Calm”

The Guardian warned that the term “truce” is creating a dangerous illusion that life is returning to normal for Palestinians confined to the 42% of Gaza still accessible to civilians, areas boxed in behind what Israel calls the “yellow line.”

The newspaper highlighted ongoing Israeli violations of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire while humanitarian conditions sharply deteriorate. Since the truce began on October 10, Israeli forces have killed more than 360 Palestinians, including at least 70 children, according to a UN official cited by the paper.

While the death toll is lower than in previous years, The Guardian noted that an average of seven Palestinians are still being killed daily, equivalent to the casualties of an active conflict zone elsewhere in the world.

Amnesty International’s assessment reinforces this view, stating that Israel continues to commit acts amounting to genocide and that the term “ceasefire” falsely implies a return to normal life.

There are currently 2.2 million Palestinians living in just 42% of Gaza, according to The Guardian. Nine out of ten people are without shelter, and 81% of homes are either destroyed or severely damaged. Winter rains have flooded camps, collapsed tents, and brought sewage surging through overcrowded areas, intensifying fears of disease outbreaks.

“The War Has Not Ended”

The American magazine The Nation argued that the war in Gaza has not ended; it has only changed form. “Gaza has been denied the chance to heal,” the magazine wrote. Rubble remains uncleared, patients remain untreated, detainees have not returned home, and the grip of occupation has tightened.

A genuine ceasefire, the magazine insisted, would mean opening borders, rebuilding destroyed infrastructure, and restoring basic life. None of these conditions have materialized. Instead, the current situation is portrayed as a deliberate stasis, “a disguised punishment” cloaked in quiet.

Even two years after the height of mass killing, the magazine noted, the Trump-brokered deal only marginally reduced the suffering and did not end it. With Israel’s blockade still suffocating Gaza, sustainable recovery is impossible.

For many in the enclave, the ceasefire has brought not relief but the harsh realization that they have been left to face their fate alone. Pain feels less like a temporary condition and more like a permanent sentence.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 16,500 people, including thousands of children, are in urgent need of medical care unavailable in Gaza.

Hunger and Disease Threaten Daily Life

Nestor Owomuhangi, the UNFPA representative visiting Gaza, said most families remain in overcrowded shelters where hunger and illness are constant threats.

He stressed that while the ceasefire was vital, it has not ended the war’s effects on women and girls, physically, emotionally, or economically. More than 57,000 families are now headed by women, many of whom have no income to support their children.

Owomuhangi described families waiting hours for food and water, cooking over open fires, washing in buckets, and sleeping under damp blankets. “People no longer ask for homes or proper meals,” he said.

“They ask for a tent, a small heater, and a light. Expectations have collapsed.”

Only a third of Gaza’s health facilities are partially functioning. All suffer from staff shortages and severe supply deficits. Newborn wards are overcrowded. Medicine is scarce. Yet healthcare workers continue to operate despite immense personal loss.

Owomuhangi emphasized that rebuilding Gaza’s health sector will require restoring destroyed facilities, ensuring a steady supply of medicine, and reconstituting its depleted workforce.

Despite the bleakness, Gaza remains a testament to endurance. Its residents continue fighting for survival under extraordinary conditions. And while hope for a better tomorrow may be dim, it still flickers, an ember that refuses to be extinguished.
