Daysofpal – Hamas leader and chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya said on Tuesday that the movement’s delegation arrived in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh to take part in “responsible and serious negotiations” aimed at achieving a complete end to Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip.
In remarks to al-Qahera News from the Red Sea resort city, al-Hayya emphasized that the Hamas team “carries the goals and aspirations of the Palestinian people for stability, statehood, and self-determination.”
“We appreciate the efforts made by Islamic and Arab countries, as well as by US President Donald Trump, to bring about a complete end to the war,” he said.
Al-Hayya underscored that Hamas is seeking “real guarantees” to ensure a permanent ceasefire, citing Israel’s previous violations of truce agreements during earlier wars in Gaza.
He stated that Hamas came to Egypt with three main objectives: to end the ongoing war, secure a full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and reach a prisoner exchange deal.
Meanwhile, Israel’s Channel 12 reported that Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner had arrived in Sharm el-Sheikh to join the talks, which multiple outlets described as showing “signs of progress.”
According to a report by Axios, the two American envoys departed Washington with the intention of staying in Egypt until an agreement is reached that includes the release of hostages and a cessation of hostilities. US officials quoted by the outlet expressed optimism that a deal could be concluded within the week.
Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani is also expected to arrive in Sharm el-Sheikh to participate in the ongoing negotiations, adding further diplomatic weight to the talks.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari confirmed that the negotiations have entered their second day, noting that many aspects of the US-backed plan remain under discussion. He described the previous day’s four-hour session as involving “delicate negotiations” on key sticking points.
