DaysofPal – The people of Gaza City woke up today to yet another forced march of displacement. What remains of the city’s population has been left with no choice but to flee south, many on foot, under the roar of Israeli warplanes and the thunder of artillery. What should be a normal street has once again become a corridor of fear, lined with families carrying nothing but survival on their backs.
Israel’s military announced that Salah al-Din Street would remain open for several hours as a “temporary evacuation corridor.” Avichay Adraee, the army’s Arabic-language spokesperson, posted a map on X labeling the road a “transit route” until 12pm (09:00 GMT).
But for Palestinians on the ground, the announcement is no humanitarian gesture. Israeli forces are pushing into Gaza City from multiple directions, cutting off escape routes and forcing residents toward the coast. Tanks, infantry, artillery, and airstrikes are being used to tighten the noose around the city, in what army spokesperson Nadav Shoshani openly described as a campaign to increase “pressure on Hamas.”
On al-Rashid coastal road, traffic slowed to a near standstill. Families piled onto carts, cars, and donkey-drawn wagons, desperate to escape the bombardment. Others simply walked. The United Nations and rights groups have repeatedly warned that Israel’s so-called “safe corridors” and “humanitarian zones” are illusions, given that nowhere in Gaza is free from shelling.
For many Palestinians, this marks yet another cycle of uprooting. “We don’t know if we will ever come back,” one displaced father told Gaza Herald. “Every time we leave, it feels like the last time.”
Still, large numbers remain trapped. The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics estimates that 740,000 people , more than a third of Gaza’s population, are still in the north, clinging to shattered neighborhoods even as bombardment rips through them. Yet with each passing hour, more are being driven from their homes by unrelenting Israeli fire.
What is unfolding is not just another military offensive. It is a calculated campaign of erasure. Gaza City, once the beating heart of Palestinian life, is being emptied under fire. Every forced march southward is another scar etched into the memory of a people who have nowhere left to run, and a world that still refuses to intervene.
